The Minnesota Twins were unsuccessful in getting the New York Yankees to take Johan Santana off their hands, and seem lukewarm about what Boston has so far offered them. So, it's possible the Twins may end up holding on to Santana, at least for the rest of this off-season.
Veteran baseball insider and tortoise look-alike Peter Gammons, at least, thinks the Twins will end up not dealing Santana at all. What does this mean for the Twins? That they'll have an ace pitcher who really doesn't want to be there - especially once they get done dealing closer Joe Nathan, and letting starter Carlos Silva go through free-agency. Obviously, the plan would be to wait until the trade deadline, then deal Santana to a contender who might at that point be more willing to part with top players.
One thing that almost certainly won't happen is the Twins re-signing Santana. Carl Pohlad has already demonstrated his unwillingness to fork out the kind of dough top free-agents command, and I seriously doubt Santana would come down in his demands, even if the Twins somehow came out next year and played above expectations.
Another possibility is that someone will come out of nowhere and make the Twins a great offer for Santana this off-season. The Angels, rumor has it, have at least been sniffing around. One team you can probably count out entirely is the Mets, who don't have anything the Twins want. The only certainty is that Santana is eventually going to get his money - and that, when he's gone, Twins fans will be even more irate than when Torii Hunter was allowed to walk.
